From the Desk of the Headteacher

DSC 11925th February 2018

Sixty teachers, children and parents have just returned from an amazing ski break to Macugnaga in the Monta Rosa region of Italy. For many children this was their first flight and trip abroad. We had amazing blue skies which made the scenery and the awesome nature of the mountains even more spectacular.

This is the fourth year that we've had a trip such as this and each year the trip and the experiences get better and better. We believe that as a school, education should be about raising children's aspirations and providing experiences that do this. I don't think that there are many primary schools in the country that can say over 50 children in their school can ski, and ski well enough to take part in races on snow and race in the South East Ski Championships.

The children have been iceskating, visited a gold mine located 500m under a frozen lake, and taken a cable car to one of the highest mountain peaks in Italy at over 3000 metres. This amazing experience enables children to show their determination, resilience, organisation, respect for themselves and the mountain, care, consideration, and courtesy for others.

Over the past week the children have grown and developed at a pace and in a way that really shows education at its best. There is a place for maths and literacy but we want to give these children something unique, a special opportunity, that really enables them to grow. We want to offer this to all children that want to take part. These are memories, skills, and talents they will take with them for the rest of their lives. I know for many they will encourage their parents and families to also take part in these outdoor activities. We would like to encourage all children to take part and have this wonderful experience in the future. We believe that this type of trip really prepares the children for the next step in their education. Experiences such as this can be expensive, many schools pay huge sums of money for similar trips, but we have made this as affordable as possible for all and we make ever opportunity to make this available to every child.

With this in mind Mrs Kym Amos is already planning next years trip. Look at our photos or come to the ski assembly this Friday morning at 9.15am to find out more.
